Parks and Recreation ends tonight. The tale of the tape is simple: watched by few but somehow survived for seven years thanks to the ineptitude that is NBC. But that isn't the whole story. Knope, not at all.
When Chuck went off the air a few years ago, the A.V. Club noted that few shows did a better job than it at making you feel. Parks and Recreation is another one of these shows. There are not many left, which is why it feels so special. Against the dark, often cynical grimness of most 2015 television, Parks and Recreation stands out because it is and has always been resolutely optimistic. There's lots more I could say on this but the link above does a good job.
And Parks and Rec was also funny. Funny in so many different ways. From amazing physical comedy—
—to goofy juvenileness—
—and hashtaggable lines and improvised lines—
—Parks and Rec could do it all. A talented, perfectly-assembled cast and solid writing kept this show fresh and enjoyable throughout its seven seasons.
In the end, we'll be left with wonderful memories, free time on Tuesdays, and a hole in our hearts. But tonight, we get to savor it one last time.
Parks and Rec, you're 5,000 Candles in the Wind.
