Word of the Day

Aggrandize (v., uh-GRAND-dies)

A fancypants, lawyerly word about extending or increasing the stature of something (often power), whether real or imaginary. You can aggrandize yourself by getting more influence and then aggrandize your accomplishments to make it seem like you have done more than you already have. This is called "being a politician."

Redesigning all 50 US state flags

The United States does not have the best flag design quality. The stars and stripes is an okay design, but many of the state flags are terribly uninspiring. A few are good, like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and South Carolina, but the majority have a seal, hard-to-read lettering, or are completely indistinguishable from each other.

There has been a little discussion about this, mostly from the North American Vexillological Association, but Bresslergroup in Philadelphia decided to do something about it and redesign all fifty state flags.

1. So simple a child can draw it from memory.
2. Use meaningful symbolism.
3. Only two to three basic colors
4. No text or seals.
5. Be distinctive, or be related—not a duplicate of other flags.

You can see many of the redesigned flags on the project flag here:

How'd they do? Ehh. Not great, in my opinion, but redesigning fifty things is always a huge challenge, especially when you're not intimately familiar with the details of those things. But the process and the attempt to move away from seals, nondescript flags, and impossible-to-read things is spot-on.
