Word of the Day

Cornpone (adj., CORN-ponw)

Folksy, homey, especially in speech. Often used to refer to Southern Americans, in a slightly derogatory sort of way. The kind of writing people who imitate Flannery O'Connor produce instead of the kind of writing Flannery O'Connor produced.

R.I.P. William Zinsser

William Zinsser passed away Tuesday at the age of 92. Zinsser wrote one of the best books on writing, "On Writing Well", in 1976. The book has gone through multiple editions, sold 1.5 million copies, and is recognized as a modern classic.

I have the book at my desk and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their writing skills. Zinsser's writing tips and principles were simple, useful guidelines. From a collection of ten of his principles:

"A clear sentence is no accident. Very few sentences come out right the first time, or even the third time. Remember this in moments of despair. If you find that writing is hard, it’s because it is hard."
“Writing is learned by imitation. If anyone asked me how I learned to write, I’d say I learned by reading the men and women who were doing the kind of writing I wanted to do and trying to figure out how they did it.”

Zinsser was a giant but a quiet giant. He will be missed, even as his work endures.
