I'm going to spoil the clip below a bit because its cover image sells it a little short. The image seems to indicate that the video will explain why CGI isn't bad. It will. But it will also show you how much CGI you didn't notice (frankly, you shouldn't) and how much goes into films, and that's what makes this video about CGI so good:
Like many things, CGI is a tool, and a tool is only as good as the hand using it. A skilled director and previz team can make some terrific ideas come to life and use the CGI to enhance the movie. But put a plethora of CGI tools in the hands of someone who doesn't have a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and you'll end up with a mess. It's all in how the effects are used. But it's probably time we stopped using them as the easy punching bag they've become. (The Rock's head on that scorpion, though...nightmare fuel.)
