A monarch butterfly metamorphosis

The Monarch Butterfly is perhaps the best-known North American butterfly and one of the signature insects period. It is nearing extinction. Its winter habitats in Mexico are being lost to logging, its summer food supply, the Milkweed plant, is being rapidly killed by herbicides. Over 90% of the population has died in the last 25 years. It is not a good time to be a Monarch Butterfly.

But man, it's still an incredible sight to see the transformation a Monarch caterpillar goes through to reach butterfly form. This is rare too—it's just hard to capture the exact moments the butterfly emerges. But a new video has a terrific time-lapse view of it:
