Word of the Day

Peruse (V., pear-OOZE)

To read through thoroughly or to glance over/skim. Wait, what?

*checks usage notes* So it looks like peruse has always mean to look through thoroughly but that's recently given way to the loose, probably wrong meaning that we use today. At least that's what a quick perusing seems to say.

Link of the Day

F.lux

"Why is your computer orange?" people sometimes ask me.

I have a program on my computer called f.lux which adjusts the brightness and color balance of the computer monitor depending on the time of day. This is important because looking at too much bright light at nights will really mess up your sleeping patterns. At night, you should be looking at something that's softer and less white/blue. F.lux does just that:

It's an awesome, lightweight app that makes it much easier to do work or relax at night. I've used it for a number of years and put it on every computer I have. Sadly, it's not really available for phones, but perhaps that's for the best. We need to learn impulse control on those. But for the computers, f.lux is invaluable.
