Word of the Day

Enclave (n., ON-klayve)

An area surrounded completely by another, enveloped by it. This often refers to countries but can refer to any distinct area. Basically, it's a fancy word for a section—it sounds way cooler—and is not always used properly.

A Day in the Life of Americans

I'm not huge into infographics—they're hilariously overused today and often badly done—but every now and then, you stumble across one that's good. A Day in the Life of Americans from Flowing Data is one of these.

There's two components to the page. First, there's a terrific flowing (shocker!) visualization of the percentage of Americans doing a task at any time throughout the day. The dots move to show people going from task to task. After that, there's a series of charts showing snapshots of time, like this one from early morning:

It's interesting to see everyone's schedules and see how much ours line up with it. It's also incredible how many people aren't "working" at a given time.
