Imbroglio (n., im-BROGUE-lee-oh)

A very difficult, confused, and perhaps embarrassing situation. Watergate. Anything -gate. A holiday conversation with that one aunt. Being moderately underdressed. Ordering food that someone is allergic to. Politics. The source of great drama. Everything, to a 16-year-old. Dealing with a 16-year-old.

O Holy Night - Trombone Shorty

We will be posting tomorrow at The Dailies and, of course, we have no idea what will be featured. Maybe it'll be Christmas-themed, maybe not.

But today, we are going Christmas-themed with Trombone Shorty's wonderful rendition of "O Holy Night", as featured on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

"O Holy Night" has long been a favorite Christmas carol/song of The Dailies, perhaps the favorite. Its wonderful melody is a joy to sing, and it has a show-stopping quality no matter how it's played. And that's why this version is so great. Instead of blowing it out to the rafters, the group plays soft, slow, and restrained—and it still works incredibly well.

This version was recorded in 2006, as New Orleans was recovering from Hurricane Katrina. I think some of that came out in this song. While the world is gleeful, this is muted. Sometimes muted celebration is all you can do at the holidays. A breath in the midst of a hurricane. Stepping outside on a night, away from the din of the party, to be alone and remember what happened so long ago and why it shakes history to this day.

A thrill of hope for a weary world, indeed.
