Writing—like all worthwhile things—is oddly self-revelatory. Write something, anything at all, and you will escape yourself and flow into the words and sentences on a page. It is intensely personal, which means that it's hard to say why writing resonates with us or how to do that kind of writing. Fortunately, George Saunders has a wonderful video to help you get started:
Note: some adult language.
There's a lot of excellent nuggets in this video. Stories have a way of going their own way and needing to do so in order to survive. Saunders' advice is well-founded.
Also, the company who did this (and my goodness, what terrific direction and effects they did!) also has a couple extras over at their website for this video. The one about the relationship between reader and writer is especially good.
