Word of the Day

Byzantine (adj., BIZ-ann-teen)

This one is kinda tricky. There's a "Byzantine" that refers to the old empire, to its iconic architectural style, to the painting style that emerged from it, and to the Eastern Orthodox Church that emerged from it. Capital-B "Byzantine" can be any of those.

But there's also a lowercase-b "byzantine," which means exceptionally complex and intricate, like tax code, soccer strategy, a definition for a word with five meanings, and a human being. That's what we're going for.

Please note also that byzantine complexity does not mean that something is not beautiful. It very well may be beautiful because of it.

Walk of Life Project

Peter Salomone stumbled onto a goldmine. Salomone is a freelance video editor and writer who created the Walk of Life Project, where he interspersed the 1985 Dire Straits song over film endings. The results are surprisingly good—for any movie.

NOTE: Spoilers because obviously. Watch at your own risk.

Big blockbuster movies do well:

The classics fare well too:

And perhaps one of the best is "Friends":

Why is this so good? Why does it work so well—and so differently—for every movie? I'm not sure whether to laugh, applaud, be oddly moved, or start playing "Walk of Life" over everything.
