Word of the Day

Splendiferous (adj., splen-DIFF-err-us)

You might think that this is just a splendid way of saying splendid. It is not. It refers to magnificent evergreen trees. Trust us. We wouldn't be fooling you, would we?

Charles Bradley - Changes

It's the end of this music week at The Dailies, and we saved the best for last:

It's nearly possible to determine where Charles Bradley's voice begins and his life ends. Abandoned at 8 months old, raised by a grandmother. Re-connected with his mother at 8, lived in Brooklyn. Lived in a bedroom with a sand floor, ran away at 14. Lived in streets, slept in subway cars. Ended in Bar Harbor, Maine, worked odd jobs, hitchhiked across the country, ended in California. Moved back to Brooklyn in 1996, re-connected with his mother again, and started singing in clubs while working with odd jobs. Almost died in a hospital following an allergic reaction. Once woke up in his mother's house when police were responding to his brother's murder down the road.

We wouldn't know much of this if Daptone Records hadn't randomly discovered him, signed him, and worked with him. It's easy to see why—Bradley's voice is stunningly raw and experienced, a fitting reflection of the man's history.

This cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes" is the title track on his record that drops today. Don't miss it.
