Word of the Day
Hiraeth (n., HEAR-aayth)
Homesickness tinged with grief, a combination of longing, nostalgia, and wistfulness. It's a Welsh word with no direct translation to English (naturally).

A two-for-one special today. Let's work backwards.
First, a few months ago, Fusion highlighted how Uber and Facebook were moving to emoji-based rating systems and examined how the companies were deploying them.
Susannah Breslin posted this during a guest stint on Kottke.org, which opened up an interesting discussion with a reader who uses emojis to review his sleep each night. The results look something like this:
emoji --> meaning
beer --> Did I drink alcohol today?
coffee/tea --> Did I consume caffeine today?
rosary + 20 --> Did I meditate for ~20 minutes?
valley + 30 --> Did I spend ~30 minutes outside today?
OFF + 60 --> Did I turn off/avoid electronic screens ~60 minutes before bed?
book + 60 --> Did I read for ~60 minutes before bed?
Before you go changing all your review to emojis, the reader makes a really good point about subjectivity: "I think it would be difficult to pass this data on to someone else and have them objectively understand it without explicit explanations of the emoji's meaning in the label."
