Have you heard about the Staten Island Ferry Disaster? It happened on the morning of November 22, 1963, when a steam ferry vanished with over 400 people on board. Eyewitnesses described "large tentacles" which pulled the ferry under.
So says the placard and memorial installed this week in Staten Island:
This, of course, is a fake. An exquisitely done fake. The amount of effort that went into making this work—the website, the "documentaries," the memorabilia, and especially the memorial with its stonecarving and aged plaque—is immense. There's doing a joke well, and then there's blowing it out of the water. (Yes, we went there. Deal with it.) Bravo, Super Fun Co. Thanks for the laugh and for surprising and fooling tourists.
