James Murphy, of LCD Soundsystem fame, is a longtime New York City resident. Since 1999, he's been trying to get the Metro Transit Authority to chance the sound of the subway turnstiles from the ear-splitting beeeeeeeeep to something more melodic. It's been unsuccessful but has garnered a lot of press over the years and even a sponsorship from Heineken. In this 2014 video, Murphy demonstrates his idea:

Cool? Absolutely. Will it happen? Probably not. One thing that goes unmentioned in all videos is ADA compliance; the beeeeeeeeep might be required to meet the disability standards. However, this does not take away from Murphy's idea in any way. It's a beautiful concept, and we sincerely hope it becomes reality.
