The Dailies

Word of the Day

Scupper (n./v., SKUPP-purr)

A hole in a boat or the side of a building where water can run off, or to open up all the holes and let the water in, sinking the boat. That is a weird pair of applications. One keeps the ship afloat; the other sinks it. Neither is tasty.

The Blue Snowball microphone

One of the best purchases we've made in recent years at Dailies Central has been our Blue Snowball microphone. We originally got it for work. We had remote team members who couldn't hear others when we had video calls for meetings, so we looked into getting a microphone that could pick up room sounds better. The Snowball came up as a good, cheap option, so we purchased it.

The Snowball is a USB microphone by Blue, who make a wide range of excellent USB microphones including the podcasting hero Yeti. The Snowball is an entry-level microphone, retailing for $70. Its sound quality is good, not great—BUT it is versatile. The back of the Snowball has three settings ranging from "good for speaking directly into it" to "good for capturing an area of sound." For $70 (or $40, if you want to buy the hideous black one), you get a microphone that is exceptionally versatile for recording, podcasting, video calls, group calls, and more. And it's from a solid manufacturer.

One note: do NOT throw this Snowball at people. You will break electronics, skulls, and friendships. Do use it for audio. You will be happy.
