Word of the Day

Sesquicentennial (n./adj., SESS-kwih-sen-TEN-knee-ull)

The hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of something, a celebration relating to the 150th anniversary, or just relating to the 150th anniversary of something. Also a word that's really fun to exclaim.

The Alperin-Sheriff/Wikipedia population dataset

Getting good sociological data is hard, especially for things like cities where the data changes often and in subtle ways. Small towns are even harder to track down. Despite what we northeasterners may think, it's a big country out there, often with a lot of room between places. Getting and mapping data is hard.

Benjamin Schmidt has been trying to map the data for 19th-century America. He turned to Wikipedia and its surprisingly excellent historical numbers, then mapped them in a fantastic, interactive writeup. We spent some time yesterday reading Schmidt's annotations, enjoying the flexibility and interaction with the data, and marveling at how well-presented it all was. This is a really cool thing. Go check it out.
