Word of the Day

Luster (n., LUSS-turr)

A soft glow or sheen, or the property of something that gives it that soft glow. Often seen in early mornings or in the flickings of candlelight. Decidedly not a feature of Bethlehem stables, at least not 2,000 years ago.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - It's a Holiday Soul Party

There are only a handful of Christmas records we enjoy at Dailies Central. It's not that the albums are bad; it's that most of them are forgettable and a commodity (especially awkward for a time when we celebrate gifts). But one of the albums that makes the rotation for us is the late Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' "It's a Holiday Soul Party."

The album is just a blast. Jones and the Dap-Kings play some standards, but their original songs are the life of the album. The entire album is straight-up fun, but the originals are interesting. For example, "Ain't No Chimney In The Projects" offers a brief but thoughtful nod to a less fortunate family celebrating the holiday:

And then there's the swinging, cheeky "Big Bulbs"—a perfect holiday dance tune for two (with fantastic harmonies to boot):

If you want a standard, try the most ridiculously upbeat version of "White Christmas" ever recorded:

"It's a Holiday Soul Party" probably can't be the only record in your rotation around Christmas, but a selection or two should be in there. You'll be dancing in no time...unless you're a Scrooge.
