Word of the Day

Swarthy (adj., SWAR-thee)

Dark-skinned. This comes from the Old English "sweart," and somehow that means having a dark complexion? English is weird, man.

Ghost apples

That is not an illusion, nor is it manmade. As temperatures began dropping into the polar vortex recently, it hit a point where it was just cold enough for the ice surrounding an apple to be intact but warm enough for the apple itself to rot. Michigan farmer Andrew Sietsma noticed that when he went to the apple, the rot would fall through the bottom, leaving behind the icy shell: the ghost apple.

If you think this is cool, you might also enjoy the frozen, duplicated street sign from the same Polar Vortex that nearly broke Reddit.
