Word of the Day

Alacrity (n., uh-LACK-rih-tee)

Quick, eager willingness, like your response when someone asks if you want to drive a Lamborghini or eat at Le Bec Fin (RIP). Right quick and in a hurry and with the smile of a puppy who sees a ball in your hand.

The Junk Drawer Project

There are plenty of sites on the internet that deal with super-organized, clean places, productivity, and an almost fetishistic desire for perfect workplaces. You'll be able to find cool ways to do things or the tools that your heroes use to keep everything together. These sites are fun glimpses into people's lives and choices, but I much prefer the other end of the spectrum.

The Junk Drawer Project is the site you should read before doing spring cleaning. The site catalogs people's drawers of assorted things and asks them personal questions about it. You find out why Jane Capellaro is keeping the thumb tack box in the (exemplary) photo below or why Rachel Teichman keeps a pair of sunglasses she won't wear.

The site's description puts it well:

The contents of a junk drawer are a historic cache of information about a person. They raise questions about what makes us happy, what objects hold sentimental value and what makes us who we are—much like a time capsule or a scrapbook.

What do you keep in your junk drawer?

I'll take a sugar pill for OCD and a beer for humanity, please and thank you.
