Shylights: unfolding lights based on flowers
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has an installation of Shylights, unfolding lights patterned after flowers. The lights are made of silk and unfold in beautiful, slow elegance:
There's not much detail in the video about what's behind the unfolding mechanism, which might lead you to believe that it's a complicated mechanism. Not so! According to Studio Drift, who created the Shylights over four years, the lights open thanks to a series of springs and close using a motor. Simple, but very cool.
