It was a dark and stormy night, just the way Mal Cardougan liked it. Night suited his mood as well as his plans. It was so much easier to pass a few well-placed bribes at night. People were afraid of being seen in the daytime. At night, though, they were wary but willing—the right balance for a takeover.
