Northlandz is a model train installation. It is huge: 52,000 square feet, more than 100 trains, and more than 8 miles of track. It is also the work of one man, Bruce Zaccagino, as "Some Kind of Quest" shows:
The thing that makes this video so interesting is that it's not just about Bruce but rather an examination of "what makes people do crazy things?" Northlandz—which you can visit easily from Philadelphia or New York—is kind of insane. It's awesome but also a Herculean amount of work for one person. As Zaccagino says, it cost him friends. Why do it?
The film leaves that question unanswered, leaving us to make the judgment about whether this was wise or not. One thing is for sure: whatever you start, it will go very differently and very much bigger than you anticipate, and it will change you along the way.
