Word of the Day
Compote (n., comm-POAT)
A dessert with fruit in a sugar syrup. Please note: this should not be confused with compost. A strawberry compost is a very different thing than a strawberry compote.

There's been a lot of good new music recently. Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek fame) released her third solo album, the torchy "Young in all the Wrong Ways." Switchfoot's wounded, lamenting ode "Where the Light Shines Through" began with this terrific number. And Needtobreathe, likely winners of this week's new release sales race, dropped a solid pop-rock album entitled "Hard Love."
And then there is Michael Kiwanuka.
The soul singer released his album "Love & Hate" last week, and it is fantastic, an album that justifies the critical acclaim with terrific songwriting, genre-bending but assured production, and a smooth, mournful voice behind it all. Take, for instance, the album's leadoff single, "Black Man in a White World:"
Or the reggae-meets-soul feel of "One More Night" with its delicious bassline:
In all the solid music of the last month, Love & Hate has stood out. It's quiet but not background music. It deserves a listen or four.
