Forbear (v., fore-BARE)
To hold oneself back from doing something. For example, Rachel forbore from going into the woods, for four bears were standing there.

Maps are notoriously limited at displaying scale. A full rectangular map will skew things on the edges to look much bigger than they are, especially compared to the things in the middle.
