Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" has a curious origin. Van Zandt was asleep at the home of some friends in Nashville, dreamed that he was a country singer, woke up, and wrote down the song from his dream in its entirety, then went back to bed. The song has remained unchanged.
It's been covered a number of times, notably by Doc Watson, but this version by the Boxcar Lilies, off their excellent "Sugar Shack" album, is terrific:
