Lara Downes' recent album, America Again, is an example of how to do an anthology well. It's loosely organized around a theme—Langston Hughes' poem "Let America Be America Again"—and features a wide spectrum of American songs, both traditional and more contemporary. Downes is a pianist, and she plays these songs beautifully, infusing them with enough stateliness to let their timelessness show through but enough pathos to move the soul. Her album demands multiple listens to fully absorb the details. Highly recommended.
