If you want incredible wordplay in your music, you're headed straight for hip hop. The verbal dexterity and intelligence in the bars of the top rappers is amazing, especially when freestyling (off the cuff). Tariq Trotter of The Roots, part of Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show band, a.k.a. Black Thought, is one of the best of all time. And, after this jaw-dropping 10-minute freestyle on the Hot 97 radio station, he might've solidified his claim as the best:
Note: some adult language. Watch it anyway.
This is easily one of the best freestyles I've ever heard. @blackthought is truly a gift to the culture, put some respect on his name. pic.twitter.com/VNtm0Hi6vM

Amazing. All the elements are there: wordplay, deep allusions, swagger, stories, social thought, braggadoccio, self-referentialism, and Black Thought's always-impeccable breath control. Too hard to keep up? Go read all the annotations on Genius and see how dense this is. And what did Black Thought himself say about this?
That verse was just what I had to say at the moment lol.
