Genius

We're starting another of our theme weeks today. This week, we're going to look at websites that do one thing only. Today, we start with Genius.

Genius was originally called Rap Genius, and that origin is important. Rap—good rap—is full of verbal dexterity, callouts, references, and a lot of subtle, quick wordplay. These are things that lyrics websites don't capture. They're good at focusing on the text, but the richness of the medium gets flattened. Genius attempted to fill in this gap by creating a site where people could upload and annotate lyrics, showing everything that was going on inside the rhyme.

Genius eventually dropped "Rap" from its name, but rap still is the best place to start. Wanna see why MF Doom is amazing? Read through "Beef Rapp." Want to understand Kendrick Lamar through his own eyes? Read his annotations for "m.A.A.d. city." A more family-friendly song to show off Genius' gifts would be Hamilton's "Satisfied." Then, compare all these to the depth of a modern pop rock song.

Genius is a good website if you want lyrics and a better one if you want to learn about the artistry behind the song. Go check it out.
