The General Pencil factory is one of the last pencil factories in the country. Started in 1889, the Jersey City-based company has cranked out thousands of pencils for all different uses.
Over a number of years, Christopher Payne visited the factory and photographed the factory and its workers. His photos are now featured in a New York Times photo essay. Here's a sampling:
