Hagiography (n., HAGE-ee-OGG-ruh-fee)

Writing about the lives of saints, especially a biography of one. Also (and more common), writing a biography of a normal person so that they appear to be a saint. So whether you're writing about Francis of Assisi or making Kim Jong Un seem like him, you're a hagiographer.

Matthias Pliessnig's steam-twisted wood benches

Matthias Pliessnig has been bending wood for more than ten years. He started in college, when he realized that a boat he was building worked well as a bench. Pleissnig developed a technique that allows him to steam wood for 10 minutes, making it malleable for about 30 seconds. Pleissnig's benches are wildly curved, as his Instagram feed shows:

I’ll have to make a 360 turntable video of this piece to demonstrate how different it looks from all angles. Many thanks to @ihannahsoukup for doing all chisel detail work and hand finishing! #steambending #seating #furnituredesign

#Repost @finewoodworkingmagazine ・・・ We just posted a new Masters of the Craft to accompany issue 254 that's hitting a fine mailbox near you (link in the bio)! @matthiaspliessnig graces the back cover and is featured in this video. Matthias is someone who is truly at the cutting edge of design while borrowing techniques that date back hundreds of years. Remarkable work and we are proud to feature him in this issue.

There's a bunch of good photos over at Colossal, showing some of the wilder designs. You can also see more photos over at Pleissnig's Instagram.
