In late 2017, 15-year-old musician Billie Eilish was interviewed by Vanity Fair. She had 250,000 Instagram followers. Her crowds were 500s. A year later, 16-year-old musician Billie Eilish was interviewed by Vanity Fair. She had 6,300,000 Instagram followers. Her crowds were 40,000s. Vanity Fair asked the same questions, creating a Michael Apted-like feel to the interview (note: a bevy of adult language):
This...is haunting. Eilish looks to have aged ten years in the last one. Her mom looks to as well. Her answers are professional and not naive, but they're cynical. And of course: you don't explode like Eilish did without going through some stuff.
But is this good? This feels a lot like Lorde's second album (which we previously discussed on the site), but where Lorde mixed her experience with a mature detachment and stayed planted in New Zealand, Eilish feels like she's walking multiple tightropes at once. Life in a digital age is a panopticon, but if you're famous, it's even more pressure-filled. Eilish's interview gives a fascinating, unnerving glimpse into what that looks like.
(Also, go watch the __ UP series. It's terrific.)
