A few years ago, Australia had problems with tractor trailers not heeding the height signs on tunnels and bridges. The trucks would plow into the edge of the tunnels, causing damage and delays that might take hours or weeks to resolve. To fix this, they came up with a two-part system. First, whenever a truck that's too tall is detected, the variable message sign immediately starts flashing "STOP!" If the truck driver ignores this, a water curtain at the edge of the tunnel starts, and a light projects a stop sign onto it:
