Word of the Day

Astringent (n./adj., uh-STRINN-jent)

Something pungent that draws things together or constricts them. Normally, drawing things together is a good thing. Your grandmother will draw the family together for Easter, and that's great. But an astringent is much sharper and more severe, and that's not like your grandmother. It is like the smell of her Baked Octopus, but that tends to drive people away.

1920s New York Fire Engine Dashcam video

That headline is not a typo. This is a dashcam video of a Brooklyn fire truck from the 1920s, and it is fantastic.

First, there's the reporting and dispatch system (involving punch cards and a massive electrical switchboard). But around 2:00, the footage changes to the dashcam. That's cool. And then, at 2:53:

Bad traffic jams force use of sidewalks

Watch for yourself.

The film is silent, so may we suggest Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" as background music?
