Zugzwang (n., ZOOG-ZVAHNG)

White to move.

The chess game is two hours old. Each side has traded blows. But black has just made a critical hit—or, rather, set up for a hit. White is in an awful spot. No matter what move White makes, the result favors black.

There is no good move.

White is in zugzwang.

And, because this is chess, this means that the game will probably last for another hour, so you've got plenty of time to look at the rest of today's installment.

Italian sculptor carves dragon head in a watermelon

Italian sculptor Valeriano Fatica carves things into fruits and vegetables in astonishing detail. Here, a time lapse video shows him carving a dragon head into a watermelon: (Note: the video's alt-metal soundtrack may not be everyone's taste.)

This reminds me of the best parts of pumpkin carving: using the parts of the medium to your advantage. Pumpkins can have 3-4 distinct colors depending on how they're cut and lit, and here, Fatica uses the redness of the watermelon to make it look like the dragon's head is heating up. Very, very cool. And be sure to check out his other carvings as well.
