Charles Dabach painted a massive portrait of Everhard Jabach and his family. Over the next 350 years, the painting slowly slipped into disrepair. It had bad varnishing, multiple scratches, and structural damage that nearly split it in half.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art restored the painting to its original glory over a period of 10 months, detailing the process in a series of blog posts and a video overview:
So much work. But the finished product is incredible, much improved on the condition of the original. Seeing it go up on the wall, reframed and restored, is a very cool feeling. To see it after (partly) understanding all the work that went into it—ten months of work—gives me an appreciation for how good these people are.
