Word of the Day

Perspicacious (adj., purr-spih-KAY-shuss)

Having a clear insight into how things work, discerning. Being able to size up a situation and determine what the best action is...or being able to size up people and figure out what's going on below...or being able to distill knowledge so that everyone clearly understands it. There are many ways to be perspicacious, and part of it is being able to adjust the method to the person. If you find someone who can do all of these ways well, run. They are not human.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

There's a new Batman movie released today. Fortunately, it's not one in the current, joyless continuity; it's the LEGO Batman movie. It looks terrific and fun, but we thought we'd take an opportunity to savor the best Batman movie and the best version of Batman on screen: The Paul Dini/Bruce Timm movie "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm."

Dini and Timm got everything right. Someone who can be both Bruce Wayne and Batman? Check. A terrific set of villains done well? Check. Humor, balanced with pathos? Check and check. Their "Batman: The Animated Series" still holds up today, but it was their movie "Mask of the Phantasm" that brought a compelling Batman story to life with top-notch animation and a great score. For example, check out these two scenes:

It's well worth watching (especially at only 76min). If you want to see a genre story done well, check out "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" this weekend.
