Desserts by Design, like John's Friendly Market, is nearly a perfect store. The quality of the food is great, the prices are reasonable, the store is human-sized, and the ownership loves its customers and is there for the long haul.
Desserts by Design started in 2002. It was opened by Rene and Richard Price, the children of two bakers, and has been an Audubon institution since then. The desserts are both delicious and delectable, especially their cakes and "minis." (They have a 5.0 on Yelp and a 4.9 on Facebook.) The owners have expanded once, purchasing the building next door and making it the main storefront while keeping the kitchen in the original store, but they have no plans to make it bigger. "Just little Audubon," said Rene Price.
There are good bakeries in other towns, but none match the quality or the friendliness of Desserts by Design. It's a top-notch establishment married to small-town sensibility.
